The film tells the story of a young girl coming of age under extreme circumstances: Nina falls in love, goes to parties, and graduates high school - all in the Warsaw ghetto. Nina's Journey is shot in Warsaw, with Polish actors. But it is narrated by the elderly Nina Einhorn herself.An ex-con who's taken part in the robbery of a racetrack is caught and sent back to prison, but he won't tell his fellow gang members where he's stashed the loot. The gang kidnaps his girlfriend and has him tortured in prison in an effort to find out where the money is.“Margarethe von Trotta’s knack for observing the big picture through the more primal politics of personal relationships works best when she focuses on the latter. In particular, the subtle and drastic power games played by intimate family members bring out her best instincts, especially when the main players are women, as is the case in her two best films, Die bleierne Zeit/Marianne and Juliane (1981) and Heller Wahn/Shear Madness (1983). Made for German TV, Die andere Frau revisits those strengths, though in a more conventional formula.
